The Northwest Music Awards highlight the music of artists from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and British Columbia. Recognized talent from around the world as well as local talent are included in the nominations. Criterion for the award was based on album originality, creativity, artwork, and sound quality. Popularity and album sales did not affect the selection for "Best Album of the Year". This is the second year in a row in which Darren Motamedy has received the "Jazz Album of the Year". In 1998 Motamedy also received the award for his "Dangerously Close" recording.
